Posted on: March 31, 2009

I just stumbled across a podcast with a panel of 2009 graduating seniors talking about how to make yourself competitive in this job market.

Some of the things that were said:

– Joining Twitter helped in making contacts and provides updates by the people in the industry

– Some students said that their colleges did not prepare them to write effectively ( so practice and ask people about how to write, do those internships) , they also said that colleges did not prepare them for the job search process ( it is not easy, you don’t automatically get a job as soon as you get a degree)

– People said that they would have started networking earlier! For anyone who is a junior or below- start blogging, twittering, creating networks, and finding internship opportunities NOW!

– Do interview preparation, frequent resume updates, research-research-research the company,

-Read the newspaper and stay updated on current events

– Ask questions and show enthusiasm during the interview

-Use Facebook and Linked in to connect with people and expand networks:  try to clean up “digital footprint” – no drunk pictures!

A very good glimpse into the minds of other students and what they are doing to start their careers.
