Is the Gender Pay Inequality Coming to an End? For Single Women, Maybe?

Posted on: September 2, 2010

Hi it’s me!

I hope everyone is well today.  In order to get myself awake and alert for the day, I usually go online and look at the news. Today, I found an interesting story on Good Morning America ( GMA) that discussed how single-young women earn 8% more than their male peers.

Although this doesn’t seem like a super high number, it indicated a trend that is shaking up gender roles in the U.S.  Gen Y maybe the first generation to have more economically equal gender roles for several reasons.  The video says that women are more likely to go to college and graduate. This fact is especially true for minority groups such as African-Americans and Latinos.

So what does this mean? Well, since the recession hit, more men have been affected with greater unemployment numbers. Also, this means that many women will become bread-winners or at least make the same as her male partner. We all know that money has a way of changing the dynamic of relationships. Historically, men made more-thus having the economic power of the woman and the family( family power is also changing since more people are wanting a more equal relationship with their partners, regardless of who makes the more money). So if those dynamics change, what would happen to the typical family?

It would be interesting to see what happens as more women make more money. Now keep in mind that a few weeks ago, GMA  had a story about mothers who suffered professionally because they chose to become parents. Here is the link to my comments about the story with a link to GMA’s report :

So let me ask? What do you think about women making more money? Why is it that single women are making more money? What happens to men?

Feel free to comment or discuss.
